needs ideas and etiquette for an appropriate retirement gift?

The man my husbands boss reports to is retiring (in other terms my husband is a director at building level, husbands boss is director at regional level, and the man in question is director at state level). Anyway, this man is retiring end of this year and is hosting a retirement dinner for all the directors around the state, about 10 plus their spouses. My husband is one of those 10. I’m not sure if we would be required- OK, I know not required but I don’t want to look like a cad- to bring a gift? Wine? Card? What?? My husband has had work interactions with him but not on a weekly or monthly basis, more like a couple times a year for meetings and training. I don’t want to show up empty handed but I also don’t want to seem simple by presenting him with a box of chocolates or overstepping by presenting him with a personalized gold watch. Ideas or suggestions needed!!!
