That night they are awakened by a clattering on the roof. Going outside to investigate, Scott can see someone on the roof. He shouts the intruder, the man lost his balance and fall to cause his death. The intruder will be in Santa Claus.

He will disappear magically, but remains his suit. You find a letter in his pocket, after which, if something should happen to him, would anyone put on the suit and the Reindeer will know what to do. They find a reindeer sleigh, and eight high up on the house. Scott relies on the Santa suit Charlie, please, and starts delivering toys from roof to roof.

Your last stop is the North Pole. The head elf Bernard (David Krumholtz), shows him a small inscription on the card, that after the death of the former residents, who wears the suit takes over the identity of Santa Claus and says all the responsibilities that go with it. This is the "Santa Clause", as Bernard said: "Put on the suit, you're the big guy." He also gives Charlie a snow globe. Then he meets a elf named Judy who says Scott, that he only eleven months until the next harvest festival 's affairs in order before he refuse to Santa Claus full time, which he tries. Charlie and he spent the night in the factory. The next morning they wake up again in Scott's home, where the only reference to her last night adventure is Scott's new silk pajamas with "SC" (Santa Claus) monogrammed on them. Scott has it all like a dream.

Scott's rapid transformation concerns of his ex-wife Laura (Wendy Crewson) and her new husband, psychiatrist Dr. Neil Miller (Judge Reinhold), attempts to end his visitation rights to Charlie. They question Scott's mental stability and believe that Scott's attempts always changes his son like him.

Finally, Scott's visitation rights are taken away for Charlie. Discouraged, begins Scott, some of his certainty about losing his job as Santa. During a visit on Thanksgiving Charlie, Charlie's insistence that Scott's new Santa-awakens Scott's magic and he with Bernard's help, kidnapped Charlie, to the North Pole. Laura and Neil, Scott has to think Charlie abducted against his will, call the police, a massive to make investigation.

Meanwhile at the North Pole, helps Charlie Scott and the Elves perfect a new sled and communication devices. He calls occasionally, but the increase only Laura and Neil's belief that he held against his will. Lastly, Scott, presents as Santa Claus on his Christmas Eve journey but when serving, to arrest his son at home and accused of the kidnapping is Charlie. to protect a team of rescue elves, the elves, Scott-free from the prison of linking the reception, and Scott and Charlie fly home to his mother and stepfather, the Scott / Santa the gifts she's always wanted since childhood, but never: Laura gets a vintage Mystery Date game and Neil gets an Oscar Mayer "wienie Whistle". (It was because of them not getting these gifts, they become convinced, Santa did not exist.)

Laura, who finally realize that Scott is really the new Santa throws the custody papers in the fireplace and come see Charlie Scott welcomed at any time he wants. Bernard tells Charlie that the snow ball is magic. Anytime he wants to visit his father, all he has to do is to shake it.
